Abstract

Laparoscopic radical nephrectomy has been introduced like a standard procedure in urology. The hand-assisted procedure gives the urologist a better tactile sensation; therefore, it makes the procedure easier and with a smaller learning curve. Materials and methods: We evaluated the use of laparoscopy in a man with a small tumor (3 cm) in the lateral portion of the right kidney. The characteristics of the patient, as well as the tumor size, were examined taking into account the easiness of the surgical dissection and its results. The CT scan was used to identify the tumor size. Results: A laparoscopic right radical nephrectomy without the necessity of converting to open was done to the patient. A 7 cm incision was made to place the left hand and the subsequent extraction of the kidney. The patient was 59 years old. Tumor size was 3 cm, located towards the lateral portion of the right kidney. Surgical time was 290 minutes. Blood loss was 350 cc Conclusions: The hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy is a reproducible technique of minimally invasive surgery that shortens the learning curve for urologists, because they are familiarized with this kind of procedure.
