Abstract
- José Martí strove for a Cuba free of racism and other forms of superficial hypocrisy in both his poetry and prose. Nicolás Guillén was able to fulfill this dream though his literary and political activity by showing that all Cubans shared the same destiny. After the revolution, Guillén continued his defense against hypocrisy by attacking the excesses of the so called "quinquenio gris" (the gray five year plan) when the state tried to impose Soviet norms and practices on Cuban society. "Digo que no soy un hombre puro" is a slap in the face to the puritanism of the Brezhnev era. This article is a work of reflection based on the trajectory between Martí and Guillén and their efforts to achieve a revolution rooted in humanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
