Abstract: Information on Danish popular music from chapter 6 of the book "Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World" is presented. It discusses the first institutions of popular music in the nineteenth century. It highlights the evolution of during this period from pre-composed to music composed for the occasion. It explores the main media for live popular music between the wars and the emergence of jazz in the 1930s. It traces the history of the Danish music industry.
