Abstract

Information on the development of popular music during the Jewish diaspora from chapter 4 of the book "Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World" is presented. It is stated that the question as to what is Jewish music has occupied researchers since the emergence of musical scholarship about Jewish musical traditions around the turn of the twentieth century. It is inferred that what ties the diverse musical traditions together is the Jewish religion in its myriad interpretations.
