Abstract

A section of the book "Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World" is presented. It discusses the history of popular music in Charleston, South Carolina. Gullah music, which was created by the descendants of the West African slaves imported by the city during the early 19th century, contributed to the development of local blues, jazz and rock music. During the Reconstruction era, Charleston's cultural atmosphere lagged, that is why popular music such as concert band performances became an alternative source of entertainment.
