Abstract
- The article discusses how former prime minister Robert Peel helped restore the Tory party to power in the British government. The Tory party suffered a massive defeat in parliamentary elections following the passage of the Whig Reform Bill. Peel was appointed prime minister by King William IV but was forced to resign by political opponents in the House of Commons. Peel became prime minister again from an electoral vote and supported the repeal the Corn Laws to reduce urban poverty.
