Abstract
- The article examines the themes of urban space, money and social mobility in several novels by 17th century Spanish author María de Zayas. It offers a critique of how women in Zayas' novels found themselves in contradictory situations in regards to their ideological values in economy dominated by money. In these novels, female characters are finding themselves in exciting new social positions due to the accumulation of wealth. Despite their new status, Zayas gives her characters ambiguous attitudes towards wealth, praising the opportunities it provides while cursing the responsibilities that are associated with financial prestige. The article cites "Desengaños amorosos" and "Novelas amorosas y ejemplares" as examples.
