Abstract
- The article focuses on the opposition of Rafael Correa, Ecuador's President, toward Chevron Texaco Corp.'s failure to clean up damage done to the country's Amazon region. Correa criticized the company's ecological crimes while leading journalists on a tour of the oil pit operation that Chevron ran from the 1960s through the 1990s and where the company's subsidiary dumped an estimated 18 billion gallons of oily wastewater. Ecuadorian and North American environmentalists, led by the organization AmazonWatch, have been working for more than a decade to compel Chevron to pay for cleaning up the former drilling site near the town of La Victoria. In 2003, the campaigners launched a lawsuit against the firm in Ecuador.
