Abstract

The article focuses on the plans of several South African countries to shift to nuclear power due to the power shortage problems faced by them. It is stated that severe droughts lowered the water levels in dams causing long power cuts, which affected the region's economic growth. With climate change threatening the future of renewable hydropower, many African nations are now contemplating a shift to nuclear power. According to Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe, the country's uranium deposits would greatly enhance the country's rural electrification program. More than 30 percent of the world's uranium deposits are found in Africa. Consequently, a number of European, American, and Australian companies are trying to establish uranium mines and nuclear reactors in the region.
