Abstract

The article presents a meta-analysis of randomized trials that study the efficacy of folic acid supplements in stroke prevention. Eight randomized trials were used. Relative risk was defined as the measure effect of folic acid on the risk of stroke, stratified to account for other treatment factors. The study found that folic acid significantly reduced the risk of stroke by 18%. Greater benefits were derived from treatment of 36 months or longer, a decrease in the concentration of homocysteine of more than 20%. no fortification or partly fortified grain and no history of stroke.
