Abstract

Cal Farley's Boys and Girls Ranch traces its roots to the Dust Bowl years in Texas. It was founded to serve youth who were left ‘homeless and hopeless’ by the Great Depression. In more recent years, the educational and treatment programs of Cal Farley's have been reconfigured into a strength-based Model of Service and Leadership. This model addresses the needs all children have for safety, belonging, achievement, power, purpose, and adventure. This discussion applies these principles to troubled youth in equine programs where they face the challenge of building relationships of trust with horses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
