Abstract

The article discusses the migration of rich American Indians from Oklahoma to the West Coast. Jackson Barnett, an Oklahoma Creek Indian who became rich from oil profits, would direct traffic outside his mansion in Los Angeles, California. Members of the Osage tribe received profits from mineral rights, making them the richest U.S. Indian tribe during the 1920s. Many American Indians fled Oklahoma to escape paternalistic property laws and to find better educational opportunities for children.
