LAND OF THE RISING SISTERS.

The article focuses on the history of Western classical violin music of 19th century Japan, particularly the women violinists Nobu Koda and Ko Koda. The social attitudes towards instrument playing as a profession in Japan are explored, also considering the attitudes towards women. Issues of gender and career prejudices of 19th century and contemporary Japan are discussed.
