Abstract
- Presents two letters written by Gustave Flaubert and published for the first time in English. Each letter was written on the day of the death of someone close to Flaubert. Each letter was then sealed and hidden away, seemingly written only for the purpose of catharsis. The two friends were Alfred Le Poittevin, who died in 1848, and Louis Bouilhet, who lived until 1869. The difference in the two letters is dramatic, as the latter is much more direct and confessional, while the first one is simply descriptive.
