Abstract

This paper is a record of the evidence given by the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education on the 11th November 1998 regarding the current OFSTED inspection process for initial teacher education courses in England and Wales. A series of important arguments are presented regarding the cost, timing, and frequency of OFSTED inspections and, in particular, the bias within and the effects of the inspection regime on the quality of the courses being inspected.
