Abstract

The central aim of this paper therefore is to critically assess the pertinence of this concept as a development planning strategy within the new neo-liberal economic climate in Southern Africa with particular focus on South Africa. This assessment is made in order to question the spatial orientation of this concept and to point out the dangers of focusing on spatial development within the broader scope of the global economic conditions: The ultimate goal is to show that the novelty of spatial development is occurring in a different economic environment that is less favourable to third world countries if it is undertaken with little caution.
