Emerging Identity.

The article analyzes how Turkey is able to maintain compatibility among military, secularism, Islam and nationalism. According to most opinion polls, majority of Turks do not see any threat to secularism even while the country is undergoing modernization and entering globalization. The author states that Western policymakers should encourage Turkey to sustain domestic support for continued reform and even explore European Union membership.
