Abstract

The article focuses on a study which revealed that an old growth forest in China holds an unusually high amount of carbon. That raised the possibility that these forests may not be carbon neutral. The study conducted in the Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve in Guangdong province of China involved 230 samples over a period of 24 years. According to Xuli Tang of the South China Botanical Garden, a coauthor of the study, the number of leaves and branches fell to the ground from the trees under observation decreased over the course of the study. Study also included soil moisture and contributing factors to global warming among others.
