This article profiles the new generation of rock guitarists in terms of innovation, sound, and skill, as determined by the periodical "Rolling Stone." They are considered the torchbearers of the old guard, which included guitar legends Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. Guitarists that are profiled include John Mayer, Derek Trucks, John Frusciante, and Mike McCready and Stone Gossard from the band Pearl Jam.
