Los desastres de origen natural en México: el papel del FONDEN.

Owing to its geographic location, Mexico is the scene of several types of natural phenomena. Hurricanes and earthquakes are perhaps the main threats to the national territory because their intensity can cause disasters. The impact of natural disasters must be taken into account for the planning of population centers. This paper deals with the impact of natural disasters in Mexico in recent years. In view of the 'inevitabi-lity' of this phenomena, the role played by the National Fund for Natural Disasters (FONDEN) as a financial instrument for helping population affected by disasters is analyzed.
