Abstract

The article reports that the mountain pine beetle forest attacks have crossed the Rocky Mountains and is now threatening Canada's entire boreal forest. Since the late 1990s, the beetles have consumed 12 to 13 million hectares of lodgepole pine forest in central and northern British Columbia. By 2013, the government estimates the insect will have killed 80 percent of the province's mature lodgepole pine. The beetles are expected to infest the Jack pine forests in Alberta.
