Abstract

A definition of the term "erythropoietin" is presented. It refers to a small glycoprotein hormone that is essential for the production of red blood cells. It promotes the survival, proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells to mature erythrocytes and facilitates hemoglobin synthesis.
