Abstract

The author describes the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy. The building was originally erected by the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 130s as his own mausoleum and as a family vault that was used until 217 A.D. The accompanying access bridge, now known as the Ponte Sant'Angelo, was for a time the only bridge that crossed from Rome to the Vatican and is now decorated with sculptures by Bernini.
