Abstract
- The article describes the work of third-generation white Kenyan conservationist and anthropologist Richard Leakey in Kenya. After Leakey was appointed in 1988 by President Daniel arap Moi as director of the Kenyan Wildlife Service (KWS), he revamped KWS and started his anti-poaching campaign. In June 1993, Leakey lost his two legs in a plane crash that some consider an attempt to stop his mission. Leakey's incorruptibility and the history of the demand for ivory are also discussed.
