Abstract

The article discusses a study on volumetric analysis of a solid acid monitored by the diffraction of X-ray. Objective of the study is to introduce students to an important class of solid state reactions while reinforcing the concepts of volumetric analysis. Each student pair mixes the correct volume of 0.1 M NaOH solution with fixed amount of ZrP in order to obtain the desired molar ratio. The pH of each mixture is measure with a pH electrode. It shows that the weakest part of the study is the pH data, which is due to the fact that student are not properly trained in the use of pH meters. The study also shows that interest of student in instrumentation is increased when forensic scientist use powder X-ray diffraction is explained.
