Saving Afghanistan.

The article analyzes the United States' position in Afghanistan. A history of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan prior to the 2001 Afghan war is discussed, as well as U.S. involvement in neighboring Pakistan, dating back to the Cold War. A critical analysis of the U.S. policy concerning the Taliban and their presence in Afghanistan is discussed. The author describes several trips he made to Afghanistan in 2006 and presents the perspectives of some of the people he met with, including former government officials. The article details Afghanistan's history through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
