Abstract

The article reports that alternative methods to disinfect water without chlorine have created a whole new suite of byproducts that might affect human health in the U.S. A study was conducted on drinking water treatment systems in regions with compromised source waters documents 28 new disinfection byproducts. Twelve water treatment plants were selected representing a variety of possible treatment technologies and local conditions. A conclusion has been drawn, signifying that source waters which is high in total organic carbon or bromide tend to lead to potential problems.
