Abstract

The article presents an overview on a study on the features of negated adjectives in modern British English. The study focuses on four negative prefixes un-, in-, non- and dis- and its appropriate usage. The results showed that un-adjectives are the most common, while dis-adjectives are the least frequent. The article mentions that adjectives with in- and non- make up the middle together with adjectives that accept more than one negative prefix. The study reveals that several factors, including the etymology of the adjective, seem to influence the frequency of negation and the use of certain prefixes.
