Abstract

The author highlights the significance of the January 2, 1956 general election in France. It is asserted that the campaign was divisive, and the premiership of Guy Mollet which followed is explored with a focus on ensuing conflicts between France and Algeria. It is explained that by the end of 1956 the Republican Front was a left-wing government carrying out a right-wing policy that effectively paved the way for the May 1958 overthrowing of the Fourth Republic.
