Abstract

This article discusses the fossil Australopithecus afarensis child skeleton named Selam found in Ethiopia. According to paleontologist Zeresenay Alemseged of the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig, Germany, she was probably drowned in a flood that swept down Ethiopia's Awash River 3.3 million years ago. Selam's remains are far more complete than two other Australopithecine children found in fossil beds at Laetoli in Ethiopia like Lucy and Taung in South Africa. Zeresenay believes that Selam's skull shows she was developing more slowly than a chimpanzee.
