Abstract

The article discusses break dancing or the b-boy culture, the preeminent form of hip-hop dance, in New York City. The dance form was developed in the early 1970s, wherein it existed in the context of park jams with performances of various popular dances. The dance context was changed into battles. Because of this, the dance is performed usually at open spaces that can hold several persons. Furthermore, a judge decides the winner after each competitor takes a turn in dancing.
