Colombia is facing a growing contamination of its water resources, since many rivers (near which more than 90% of the total population is settled) are polluted by raw wastewater discharges. Currently, the average coverage of wastewater treatment in the country is around 12%. There is some research work showing that anaerobic systems followed by natural systems are a good technological combination for small municipalities and rural areas.
