Abstract

A definition of the term "airway surface liquid" (ASL) is presented. It refers to the very thin fluid layer, approximately 7 µM, maintained at the apical membrane of airway epithelia. The tight control of fluid reabsorption and/or secretion, mediated by sodium and/or chloride channels, maintains ASL thickness.
