In the context of Christmas celebrations marked by emotions, the text of Matthew 2, verses 1 to 12, tends to receive superficial and frivolous interpretations. By means of a purely theological interpretation, some people see the Magi playing the role of the gentiles who come to Jesus in order to attain salvation. This article seeks to offer a different interpretation by analyzing the passage from a historical perspective, especially regarding the Magi. This is central to the understanding of the text, in particular the tense relationship between the Magi and Herod. These people will be placed in the context of the disputes among great Western and Eastern powers when Jesus Christ was born.
