Abstract
- The article focuses on the lotted land systems in North East Scotland since 1850. The system was an adaptation of the long narrow fields or rigs associated with medieval royal burghs. Additional land was added as villages grew. The establishment of these villages are explained by several factors. One is that they were associated with enclosure and remodeling of farms and another is that planned villages offer a number of uses such as for part-time farming and employment opportunities for tradesmen.
