Abstract

Abstract: Introduction: The aim of the study was to measure the energy cost in rhythmic gymnastic. Methods: Twelve elite rhythmic gymnasts belonging to the national French team participated in this study. Maximal oxygen uptake and lactate concentration were measured in laboratory following a maximal test, after the four implements (rope, clubs, hoop and ball) and after a training session. Results and discussion: Maximal values were ranged between 37.95 and 45.77 ml min–1 kg–1 and 25.12 ml min–1 kg–1 for training. The lactate concentrations were significantly higher (P <0.05) for exercises including hoop, rope, clubs compared to those measured in laboratory P <0.05). There was no correlation between oxygen uptake and blood lactate concentrations and the performance level of each gymnast. Rhythmic gymnastic was caracterised as an anaerobic sport.
