Abstract

The article offers a look at how, despite recycling efforts, trees will never be fully spared because recycling wears out hydrogen bonds between fibers. Every time a fiber is cleaned, de-inked, and dried, only 80 percent of the bonds recover. Although engineers can do little to overcome this limitation, they are focusing on reducing the cost of reprocessing fresher fibers. Several diagrams are presented.
