Abstract
- The authors report that Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature. Pamuk is Turkey's best-known and best-selling novelist as well as an advocate of freedom of speech who has attracted criticism by Islamists and Turkish nationalists. The political implications of the Swedish Academy's choice are mentioned. Pamuk's literary and personal history are discussed. INSET: Excerpts From Nobelist's Work.
