This article reports on an initiative that would have expanded the authority of the European Union in judicial matters in member countries. The EU had proposed to increase its authority not only in cross-border crimes, but in the criminal justice systems of European countries in general. Member states Germany, Ireland and Great Britain voted against the proposal at a September 2006 meeting in Tampere , Finland.
