Abstract

The article presents an answer to a reader's question on why the British drive on the left side of the road. Among the theories are that the custom comes from a 1722 decree ordering carriages to travel on the left side of the road to ease congestion on London Bridge, the fact that coachmen could drive more effectively on the left, or the Roman tradition.
