Abstract: The article focuses on a college-scholarship program launched by former U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards in Greene County, North Carolina in 2006. The program offers college-application advice to high-school seniors as well as financial assistance for their first year of college at selected institutions. Greene County was chosen because its income and education levels are much lower than the state's averages, said Jim Diana, the North Carolina project manager for the program.
