Abstract

Fluoroquinolones are considered to be relatively safe and effective antibacterial agents. Treatment with fluoroquinolones has become increasingly popular because of excellent gastro-intestinal absorption, superior tissue penetration along with broad-spectrum activity. The association between tendon rupture and fluoroquinolones were well established with older quinolones but very rare with newer quinolones like levofloxacin. We report a very rare case of spontaneous bilateral Achilles tendon rupture in a 66 year old patient associated with levofloxacin. This patient was started on levofloxacin for a chest infection. Ultra sound scan and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the diagnosis. Early surgical repair was performed. The patient recovered well with no sequel of tendon rupture. Emphasis is placed on the necessity of identifying this potential and probably unusual complication of these newer antimicrobials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
