The article reports on the spending, gender and immigration trends in global research and development. Spending is measured in terms of purchasing-power parity dollars. Majority of scientists and engineers in the world are male, and only a little more than one-fourth of the employees in the research sector are women. The effect of cultural issues on the movement of scientists from one nation to another is discussed.
