Abstract
- The article presents information about the Union commander George Brinton McClellan. According to biographer, Warren W. Hassler Jr., McClellan was a fabulous general who reacted appropriately and positively to every military threat he faced. McClellan's inflexible and rigid thought patterns doomed him to also-ran status as a general. Conflicting statements are made about McClellan's single term as governor of New Jersey from 1878-81. Some consider him a giant as the state's chief executive, a principled, visionary leader who advanced ideas and achieved things that ordinary men just could not fathom at that time.
