Abstract

The article discusses the startle response to acoustic stimuli which has been a popular method of examining the basic motivational tendencies of the body. Startle in animals is described as the strength of the reflex movement of the entire body. In humans, the approach is to measure the amplitude of the electromyographic response of the orbicularis oculi muscle including those connected with acoustic startle. An examination of postural adjustments and eye blink responses is made which consists of an initial anterior movement followed by a posterior movement of the center of pressure.
