Abstract

The article presents an account of the author's family generation in Germany. His grandfathers and colleagues had a calling that was the center of their lives including the free professions of medicine, law, and the clergy. His doctor-forebears are the direct heirs of clinicians devoted to the creation and expansion of a scientific basis for medicine.
