Abstract

Following the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, U.S. officials are hesitant to express excitement, but American Ambassador in Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad sees the event as an opportunity to suppress the insurgency. Zarqawi was feared even among his fellow terrorists because of his unique brand of savagery, and although a Zarqawi clone is not likely to emerge, it will be difficult to dispel the violence he was influential in inciting.
