Abstract

The article presents information related to security issues in Voice-over-IP (VoIP) networks. As most of the private-and public-sector organizations and service providers are planning to migrate to VoIP and the associated emerging real-time services, such as IP multimedia subsystem, IP TV, and conferencing, the need to secure VoIP communications is becoming increasingly urgent. The primitive differences between VoIP and data security are that, VoIP has characteristics such as high sensitivity to quality-of-service parameters, all VoIP communications are real-time, a wide range of new infrastructure devices are required, and the most important thing is that VoIP networks interact with the existing phone networks. With the diverse benefits of VoIP systems, including the reduced cost of deployment and management, it is predicted that by 2009, 91 percent of all enterprise phone systems worldwide will be represented by VoIP technology.
