Abstract

The article discusses problems and security risks associated with peer-to-peer (P2P) network applications. A P2P network is a type of network in which several users are able to share files directly with one another. P2P applications, such as Kazaa and eDonkey, are generally free softwares that promote easy searching, downloading, and file sharing. The problem with programs is that these programs are supposed to be spywares and adwares and if a user attempts to manually remove these unwanted applications, they do not function properly anymore. Another risk that has been noted with these adwares, spywares, and P2P networks is rogue or malicious software installations. It is reported that in a recent test of P2P executables, a large quantity of executable files was downloaded from a P2P network. And when these files were scanned with anti-virus software to determine whether they were malicious, more than 60 percent of them contained some sort of malicious code.
