Abstract

The article presents information on the making of the documentary film Kakadu & Arnhem Land," by Australian Geographic film division. The crew had traveled through the region many times before but, sensibly, in the cooler, winter months. Tourist numbers were down, but the concentration of wildlife around billabongs and waterholes was at a premium. Kakadu and Arnhem Land are the two of the jewels in the Top End's natural crown. Everywhere they turned the camera there was something startling to behold, a natural and cultural landscape truly deserving of its World Heritage status. With support from the Northern Territory Tourist Commission and the Australian Government director of national parks, the unit worked closely with a variety of Top End experts including people like biologist Ian Morris. The unit members indicated that the film includes the deeply moving stories of Aboriginal elder Bessie Coleman and the chairman of the Kakadu Management Board, Jacob Nyinggul. The team were also privileged to meet many of the custodians of the region.
